About Us

Dr. Karen Cole, Executive Director  Contact
Dr. Cole is an award-winning educational psychologist and author. She earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Stanford University in 1995. She founded Big Learning, an educational non-profit, in 2007. Prior to that, she worked for over twenty years in educational research and development, specializing in real-world learning, math education, and educational technology. She was a Senior Research Associate at WestEd in San Francisco, where she was the project director and principal investigator for WestEd's subcontract for the Challenge 2000 Multimedia Project, funded by the Department of Education. While there, she co-authored the book, Increasing Student Learning through Multimedia Projects, published in 2002 by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD).

Jane de Winter, President  Contact
Jane de Winter holds a Ph.D. in economics and has taught at the University of Washington and The American University.  She has also worked as an economic consultant and is a published author.  Jane has been involved in Montgomery County PTAs for 16 years, serving as PTA president at two local schools and as President of MCCPTA, the county wide PTA. She is a member of the Montgomery County Commission for Children and Youth.  All four of her children have participated in either the HOS or FLES programs at Garrett Park ES.

Mary Carvajal, Secretary/Treasurer  Contact

Mary Carvajal has an MA in linguistics, specializing in teaching ESOL at university level.  She most recently taught at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and is currently staying home with her children.  All her children have participated in the FLES program at school.  Her husband is bi-lingual, and they strongly support second language learning.  She has served on both their children’s pre-school school board and the elementary school PTA executive board.  In addition, she has acted as coordinator for both HOS and FLES at her children’s school.


Prince Havely  Contact
Prince Havely has been singing professionally for over thirty years. He is a graduate of the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music.  He has been with the Washington National Opera for five years and has also sung with the Gene Donati Orchestra, High Society, and ETX. He performed with the Air Force Academy Band for four years. He has participated in the Montgomery County Cultural Arts Showcases as a performer and as the Cultural Arts chair for the Galway ES PTA.  He is a Cub Master for Pack 44.

Leslie Pujo  Contact
Leslie Pujo is an attorney with LaPlaca Law, PC in Rockville, Maryland where she represents and counsels clients in a variety of industries on franchising, car rental regulations, commercial contracts, and other general business issues.  Before joining LaPlaca Law, Leslie served as in-house franchise counsel for Choice Hotels International, Inc. and prior to that was in private practice in Washington, DC where she focused on franchise, international trade and related matters.  Leslie also has served as an adjunct professor at the George Washington University Law School and in the Global Business and Public Policy Program at the University of Maryland University College.  Leslie received her BA in French and International Affairs from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas; her JD from George Washington University; and an advanced degree in International Law from the University of Toulouse, France.
